NERHA/KPMG Comprehensive Health Care Review 1999/2000
Of the four hospitals, St. Ann’s Bay has recently undergone an extensive renovation with the
construction of new wards and the refurbishing of the existing building.
A second renovation phase is now being planned. At Port
Maria Hospital and Health Complex extensive
refurbishing is undergoing. The main building
which house the Accident and Emergency Room (A&E) has
been condemned. The plan includes transferring the A&E department
and the Paediatric ward to the new building;
refurbishing the old Paediatric ward and
converting it to administrative offices to house the Health Department.
The new radiology-imaging unit has now been installed, and equipment
is being procured for a new laboratory. In a second phase the health
centre is to be upgraded and converted into a first class facility.
The Annotto Bay Hospital is also undergoing refurbishing
with future plans to upgrade it to a type B hospital. Port Antonio Hospital
is in the process of building a new A & E unit, and further
reorganization of the hospital facilities to improve patient flow
and efficient use of available space.
The Comprehensive Health Care Review conducted in 1999-2000
was intended to gather enough information and elements to take major
decisions in rationalisation of health
facilities especially concerning number of health centres
and hospital beds in the region. This has allowed the Region to
establish a total reconfiguration plan for the next five years.
