Risk Assessment

This is a tool for fighting STIGMA, SHAME, DENIAL, DISCRIMINATION, IN-ACTION, AND MIS-ACTION RELATED TO HIV/AIDS.

PERSONAL RISK ASSESSMENT EXERCISE

  • It is strictly confidential. No one should see what you are writing. Use a paper you will not need later on and after scoring, destroy it.
  • Be honest. This exercise is for your personal benefit, use and increased knowledge/understanding of HIV/AIDS issues and associated     risks/vulnerabilities so do not     lie to yourself.
  • Look Back. For every question you hear, stretch your mind to the last time you had an HIV test done or to the last time you thought about doing     an HIV test.
  • Scoring

  • For questions 1 – 9, if your answer is to question being asked is a ‘YES’, write ‘10’ on your piece of paper. If it is ‘NO’, write ‘0’.
  • For question 10 – 12, a ‘YES’ scores ‘0’ and a ‘NO’ scores ‘10’.

  • Looking back at your life and keeping the length of the 'incubation period’ in mind.

    Answer the following questions honestly:

  • Were you born after 1981/1982?
  • Have you or your sexual partner ever had a blood transfusion?
  • Have you or your sexual partner ever shared skin piercing/skin penetrating instruments?
  • Have you or your sexual partner ever had injections from ‘non-professional injectionists’ who may not have cared to sterilize.
  • Have you ever had sex?
  • Have you ever had sex with someone who had already had sex with someone else?
  • Have you ever had sex with more than one sexual partner?
  • Have you ever separated (moved away, divorced, stopped a relationship) with your sexual partner and then resume the relationship after     sometime?
  • Have you ever had a sexually transmitted infection?
  •     YES: 0                   NO: 10
  • Were you a virgin when you married? If you are not married, are you a virgin now?
  • Was your sexual partner a virgin when you married him/her?

  • NOTE: If you have a total score of ‘0’ for the 11 questions, add another ‘0’ and end the scoring. If you have a score of 10 and above: Hear question 12 and answer it honestly.

  •  Do you (correctly and consistently) use a condom every time you have sex?

  • INTERPRETATION OF THE SCORES

  • A total of ‘0’ in all 12 questions means you are not yet at risk for HIV/AIDS infection.
  • A total of ‘10’ and above means you could be at risk of HIV/AIDS infection.
  • The higher the total score, the higher the degree/possibility of the risk.

  • QUESTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS
